Minimum wage policy was part of the SOTU address last night. As it turns out, 20 states plus DC have minimum wages higher than the federal level. CEPR notes that:

As of January 1, 2014, 13 states raised their minimum wage, with California set to follow suit with an increase to $9 in July. Of these 14 state increases, 9 are automatic adjustments based on indexing the value of the minimum wage to the cost of living, while 4 (NJ, CT, NY, RI) are the product of either ballot-measures or legislative action.

FW: Oh, Oscar[infographic]

Eyeing the Academy Award nominees

If you are an actor who wants to be nominated for an Oscar you could do a lot worse than catch the attention of director David O. Russell. When four actors secured Oscar nominations for their performances in his film "Silver Linings Playbook" last year, it was the first such full house seen at the Academy Awards since Warren Beatty's "Reds" in 1981. Now Mr Russell has done it again, with "American Hustle" – a rich but baggy film – securing nominations for Christian Bale and Amy Adams, who performed the lead roles, and Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, taking the supporting.

All told "American Hustle" won 10 nominations, as did "Gravity", Alfonso CuarĂ³n's remarkably grand-in-visual-scale, tight-in-the-telling story of a disaster in space. Steve McQueen's magnificent "12 Years a Slave"...Continue reading

Investing in your “personal capital”

Anyone who has read this blog for long knows we don't go much for forecasts or stock picks. So when asked for the "best investment ideas for the next decade" by Matthew Boesler at Business Insider we got creative…

26. Intellectual, social, physical, and emotional capital

"Giving stocks picks and the like is not the business of Abnormal Returns  I have written a lot over the past couple of years talking about the advances in low-cost investing. So in that regard investors would do well to take advantage of this 'free lunch.' So instead of spending countless hours trying to tease out the next hot stock why not invest in yourself. I know that sounds like a bit of new age cliche, but hear me out. The best investment you can make with your marginal dollar (or hour) is in your intellectual, social, physical and emotional capital. Most investment advice is about staying rich. The key to a richer, fuller life is maximizing your potential. For the vast majority of people, time spent in front of the computer searching for the next Twitter or Tesla isn't it."

—Tadas Viskanta, founder and editor of Abnormal Returns
